Professor of Anthropology & Sociology

Ailbhe Smyth

One of Time Magazine’s ‘Most Influential People’ of 2019 for her work as Co-Director of ‘Together For Yes’ and as Conveyor of ‘Coalition to Repeal the 8th Amendment in Ireland’.

Ailbhe has been a long time advocate for women’s reproductive health and gender equality in Ireland and has served as Co-Director of Together For Yes and Convenor of Coalition to Repeal the 8th Amendment.

As a result of a historic referendum held in May 2018, the Irish people have voted by a landslide to repeal the 8th amendment to the country’s constitution, allowing the government to legislate for abortion. The vote illustrates the monumental shift in attitudes towards women’s rights in Ireland.

It was for her work on this campaign that Ailbhe was named one of Time Magazine's ‘Most Influential People’ of 2019 alongside Grainne Griffin and Orla O'Connor.

Ailbhe was in Vancouver earlier this year when she attended the UN Women Deliver conference and her return will be eagerly anticipated by all who heard her speak during her visit at a reception organized by the Irish Women’s Network and the Irish Consulate.

Don’t miss AILBHE SMYTH our evening keynote speaker direct from Dublin.
